First off you have to decide whether your going to screw people over or try to make an honest living and pay your bills. I personally have a set fee and I set it according to my overhead. This is the fee for showing up to the customers’ house, and “dropping” the gate and it's my minimum service charge. Keep in mind that you and you alone know how much money you need to make or to show a profit. A fair price and a good job can go along ways to a customer. (word of mouth) Sell yourself not your business.

Depending on the location, how many other clients you have in the area, the house, the personality of the client, the amount of quality you think the customer will expect, etc, etc, you can give them a little different quote. Also take into account the size of the lawn, obstacles and areas that may take more time I.E areas that you can't fit the big mower in and have to push mow.

If a customer requests a bi-weekly mow, and it is a reasonable request (on a slow growing lawn) allow it, but charge a bit extra.

Last but not least, If you want price bargaining power, quote a little high on the price. Giving a higher price first allows room for bargaining on the customers end. If you first give you bottom line price then people’s tendencies will be to negotiate anyway and you will have no room to bargain with. Also, if you give the high price first and they don’t negotiate, you get more for the property anyway so it’s a win-win situation. thumds up

When I price a job I price by the acre. Usually I try to charge $15-25 a acre. Sometimes I charge by the acre and by the hour. On average I can cover 2 acres a hour with the John Deere. Mostly I try to cut on a 2 week schedule but if a customer wants their property mowed weekly I charge the same price. Most of the yards I cut are large so I can run my biggest tractor. The smaller parts ether get push mowed or trimmed with the weed eater.

I then charge a separate price for trimming. Usually I charge $30 per hour when trimming. Most of the time I get hired just to do the trim work at hard to reach areas. I have done a lot of steep slope trimming and no mowing in the past. In the fall I get hired to remove leaves or mulch them. When I get hired to remove leaves I usually take them and use them in my garden. That way it is a win win for both party's.

Sometimes I just get hired to help haul brush or remove rocks and other debris out of yards. I get hired by word of mouth and buy the quality of the work.

I charge by the size of the job or yard. I do sub-divisions and all the lot sizes are basically the same. Fifteen for a regular and Twenty for a corner lot. That includes Trimming the house and anything in the yard, Mowing, edging and cleaning up (blowing) afterwards.

Well, it depends upon the size of the yard. My lawn was re-construct by the lawn care expert at Sprinklerman Cove Landscape. They gave amazing look to my lawn and very affordable.

We are new to the lawn mowing business and would like some help on charging. Say for instance the normal 1/4 acre house block also if they want rubbish removed or weeding. Any help appreciated.

That kind of depends on what or your location would be, are there fences or other obstacles involved?
